The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered suffers from a huge problem on consoles

Available for three weeks now via a Shadow Drop that hasn't been secret for a long time, Oblivion Remastered has clearly had a successful launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. The remake of The Elder Scrolls 4 on the Unreal Engine 5 has delighted both players of the original game released in 2006 and newcomers. But this idyllic return to Cyrodiil would turn into a nightmare on consoles as the adventure progresses, if we are to believe numerous feedbacks and an in-depth investigation by the expert analysts at Digital Foundry.

Hidden vice in the console versions of Oblivion Remastered?

At first glance, the work of Virtuos (who are also responsible for Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake coming on August 26) on Oblivion Remastered commands respect. Cyrodiil rendered on Unreal Engine 5 is a true visual delight, retaining all the magic of the original game, with the added bonus of some improvements, albeit rather modest, to the gameplay. However, over time, the preliminary enchantment turns into a performance nightmare, at least on consoles.

Many PS5 and Xbox Series players have reported severe drops in frame rates after several hours of play on Oblivion Remastered. Digital Foundry took up the matter and conducted extensive testing to see just how severe. The result is unfortunately clear: the further you progress with The Elder Scrolls 4 Remaster on consoles, the more problems accumulate, even on PS5 Pro. The frame rate per second can drop to around 20 FPS, with the added bonus of instability issues and untimely crashes.

Unfortunately, Oblivion Remastered would follow the original game a little too closely in this respect. The latter was also known for its performance issues as you progress through the game, among other bugs notoriously known in Bethesda productions. These issues would therefore not be exclusive to this rework of the title on Unreal Engine 5. The PC version, on the other hand, seems to be doing very well. But Bethesda and Virtuos must react quickly with a major patch to save the console versions from this hellish incursion into Cyrodill and Oblivion Remastered.
