The individualities are strong in Dragon Ball, but that doesn't mean the manga lacks memorable teams. The one formed by Goku and Vegeta is a good example, but it's probably not the best duo in the series. Another contender for that title, and it's just as iconic.
Goku and Vegeta: A Legendary Duo
Goku and Vegeta are like Yin and Yang: one is a low-class Saiyan, the other an elite Saiyan; one is naive and innocent, the other is gruff and arrogant. With such differences, they could only be rivals. This "conflict" continues for almost the entire duration of Dragon Ball Z, so much so that they can't really be considered a duo. It's only at the very end, against Buu, that they truly act in tandem, and even then, this only happens because Vegeta evolves. Can we then consider them a true duo? Well, yes.
The Goku/Vegeta alliance is brief in the original work, but it becomes central in the ancillary works. Bringing together the two most iconic and powerful characters in their universe is almost a fantasy, and each parallel creation has plunged into it. The movies and Dragon Ball GT did it, but it was Dragon Ball Super that took it the furthest. Goku and Vegeta remain rivals, but are now at the same stage: both are Whis's students. They train and face threats together. It was really Dragon Ball Super that gave substance to this duo, and given the popularity of both characters, it could only be the most legendary... or almost. Poll: Who is the best Dragon Ball duo? Gohan and Piccolo: A unique relationship The duo formed by Goku and Vegeta can sometimes seem forced, existing solely to satisfy fans. The same cannot be said for Gohan and Piccolo. Like the Saiyans, they were polar opposites. Yet, they quickly grew closer, with the Namekian becoming Goku's son's master. Strong bonds quickly formed between them, reinforced by Piccolo's sacrifice against Nappa. Their relationship instantly became deep and touching, laying an excellent foundation for what followed.
In DBZ, Gohan and Piccolo don't often fight side by side. They do so when the Saiyans arrive, against Frieza, and train together again during the Cyborg arc, and that's it. However, they don't need to fight together to form an excellent duo. Their teacher-student, even father-son, relationship is constantly highlighted. There's sincerity, respect, and affection between them. DBS has captured this beautifully, even in battle during the Tournament of Power or against Cell Max in the Super Hero movie. Now almost at the same level, there's no doubt we'll see them fight together again, but even if they never do, they're a duo as good as, or even better than, Goku and Vegeta.
