Last week, we learned that the film adaptation of Elden Ring, FromSoftware's lavish 2022 Game of the Year, had finally found its director in Alex Garland. So, it was expected that some casting details would start to emerge—and that's exactly what's happening, according to Variety. According to the American media, he's reportedly considering casting Kit Connor.
This wouldn't be the filmmaker's first time working with the English actor. The two previously collaborated on Warfare, released last April. Connor previously made a name for himself in other notable blockbusters, such as Heartstopper, Rocketman, and Civil War. He therefore has significant experience in very different registers - and that will undoubtedly be necessary to carve out a place for himself in the universe imagined by FromSoftware and George R.R. Martin.
A dense, rich, but undoubtedly difficult to embodylore
Indeed, Hidetaka Miyazaki's troupes tend to tell their stories using a good dose of environmental storytelling rather than classic dialogues or narrations. There are plenty of iconic characters, certainly — but they're often relatively abstract and nebulous presences, like the studio's lore as a whole.
The first big question will be what story the writers will try to tell. Do they intend to cover all the behind-the-scenes details of Shattering as a whole, starting with the destruction of the Elden Ring and the emergence of Marika's Golden Order? This seems far too ambitious for a single film, and it's a safe bet that the producers don't want to commit to one or more sequels before they've been able to gauge the performance of the first installment.
Most likely, the team will decide to focus on a specific narrative arc. The advantage is that the narrative threads that can be explored are both very rich and numerous. We can cite a jumble of the Night of the Black Knives that led to Godwyn's death, Marika's journey and shenanigans, the personal aspirations of demigods like Godrick, Ranni and Radahn, or even the tragic story of Malenia... Garland and his collaborators are therefore spoiled for choice.
In any case, whatever narrative arc the team selects, it will require serious work of interpretation and a lot of finesse to transcribe this universe to its true value. We are already eager to see if Connor will indeed inherit the position, and if so, how he could position himself in a role that risks being particularly demanding. See you in a few months for the first concrete answers.
