Harry Potter casting announcements are coming thick and fast! After revealing the names of the new actors for the main characters, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, at the end of May, HBO is still far from having finished with the casting. Yesterday, we learned that an actor has joined the series' ranks in the role of an unexpected protagonist - we'll explain why.
Bertie Carvel joins the cast of Harry Potter
At 47, British actor Bertie Carvel will soon be starring in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the new spin-off of Game of Thrones expected in 2026 and whose HBO has no doubt about the success (the proof), as well as the Harry Potter series, whose first season will arrive the same year on the platform. After starring in The Crown on Netflix, the actor is changing streaming services with two very big productions. For the magical world of J.K. Rowling, Deadline has just announced that Bertie Carvel will play Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic between 1990 and 1996. Previously played by Robert Hardy in the Warner Bros. films, this character appears for the first time in Chamber of Secrets. Hence our perplexity at the announcement of this casting!
HBO announces a character from season 2 of Harry Potter: what it means according to Hitek
So far, HBO has revealed a cast of regular characters within the world of Harry Potter, from the trio Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout & Arabella Stanton (Harry, Ron, and Hermione) to the Hogwarts teachers (Paapa Essiedu as the problematic Snape, John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid). All of these characters appear in Sorcerer's Stone, but Cornelius Fudge isn't supposed to appear until book 2—so the second season. We have two hypotheses (please let us know in the comments if you think of a third possibility): either the American network is already selecting the actors for the next seasons of the series, or the Minister of Magic will be involved from season 1. In the first case, this proves how confident HBO is in the future audiences of its series, and that it has no doubts about its success. In the second case, this means that changes are being made by the writers to J.K. Rowling's work, and viewers can already expect some surprises in the first episodes.
But who is Cornelius Fudge in Harry Potter?
Cornelius Fudge is not a character that fans like. The man who will be Minister of Magic for much of Harry, Ron, and Hermione's school years remains deaf and blind to the manifestations of Dark Magic surrounding Voldemort's return. Traumatized by the First Wizarding War, this politician discredits Harry and Dumbledore through a media campaign designed to turn the magical world against them, then he places Dolores Umbridge at Hogwarts in order to have a "spy" within the school. It's a safe bet that the series will further explore the mysterious Ministry of Magic, about which you can discover anecdotes here, which the films skimmed over due to lack of time.
