One Piece: Shanks is more present than ever

Shanks has been a character since the beginning of One Piece. Despite his limited appearance time, he remains a fan favorite and a pirate surrounded by many mysteries. The latest arcs, however, have put him back in the spotlight, whether during his confrontation with Eustass Kidd or through the revelation of certain elements about his family.

One Piece has finally revealed the truth about Shanks' lost arm.

In Chapter 1138, we learned that Shanks belonged to the Figarland family and that he had a twin brother named Shamrock. More recently, Chapter 1152 revealed that he and Scopper Gaban were present on Elbaf during the assassination of King Harald, and that the Redhead knew him. This same chapter also revealed a crucial element about the real reason behind the loss of his arm.

The truth about Shanks's arm loss finally revealed

The loss of Shanks's arm to the Sea King in Chapter 1 of One Piece has been the subject of much discussion. Many theories have circulated: some believe that Eiichiro Oda hadn't planned everything in advance, others that Shanks wanted to teach Luffy a lesson by showing him the consequences of his actions. However, the most popular theory remains that the Redhead deliberately let his arm be bitten off to "bet on the future" as he told Whitebeard. Chapter 1152 has finally provided some answers, and it supports this latest theory.

One Piece has finally revealed the truth about Shanks' lost arm.

In Chapter 1152, Shanks is seen taking a bath with Scopper Gaban. In one panel, we can see a cross-shaped tattoo on his left arm, a design identical to the one found on Sommers' and Killingham's armbands. This could be a birthmark or a mark proving that he was, at one point, a Divine Knight under Imu. In any case, this tattoo is no longer present today. By sacrificing his arm to the Sea King, Shanks not only placed his bet on Luffy, he also drew a definitive line under his family and the World Government. He thus combined business with pleasure by getting rid of a burden while fully trusting his protégé. We can therefore say that, in a way, Shanks is the first character to have been freed by Luffy.
