Tesla, Renault, Citroën, BYD… Buying an electric car will soon cost more, here are their prices if you wait too long

The R5 e-Tech, the Tesla Model Y, and even the Citroën e-C3... The price of these very popular electric cars could increase by several thousand euros in the coming months. We'll explain why.

Tesla, Renault, Citroën, BYD… Buying an electric car will soon cost more, here are their prices if you wait too long

As you may know, buying an electric car in 2025 is already more complicated than in 2024. This is due to a severe cutback made by the previous Barnier government on the various purchase aids. As a reminder, the budget dedicated to greening the French vehicle fleet has taken a serious hit, dropping from €1.5 billion to just €700 million.

As a result, the amount of some aid has been revised downwards, while others have simply disappeared. This is the case, for example, of the scrappage bonus, which bowed out last December. As for the ecological bonus, the star of aid for purchasing an EV is still resisting. However, it has lost its luster. Via a decree published at the end of last year, the scales have undergone a significant cut, and this applies to everyone (from the most modest budgets to the most well-off):

  • €4,000 for an individual whose reference tax income per share is less than or equal to €16,300
  • €3,000 for an individual whose reference tax income per share is greater than €16,300 and less than or equal to €26,200
  • €2,000 for an individual whose reference tax income per share is greater than €26 €200

The ecological bonus continues, but for how long?

But that's not all. This decree also provided another important piece of information: the bonus will be granted up to a maximum amount. We imagine that this is part of the 700 million euros allocated by the authorities.

However, as we learn from a new decree published on June 4, 2025 in the Official Journal, the State is determined not to spend more than planned. Indeed, this decree specifies that from June 5, 2025, “the filing of a request for reimbursement of the advance of an ecological bonus, by a professional approved by the Services and Payment Agency, is now conditional on the registration of this project at the stage of the vehicle order by said professional, on a platform made available by the ASP”.To put it simply, dealers must now request the request for reimbursement of the ecological bonus within 30 days of purchase… Otherwise, they will not receive it.

The death of the bonus would inevitably increase prices

If we read between the lines, We can therefore deduce that the government is more or less trying to put a stop to the ecological bonus here... And that the allocated envelope is already shrinking visibly. This is not surprising in itself when we know that 120,000 electric cars have found buyers in France since the beginning of the year.

To continue with the hypothetical, if the ecological bonus were to be suspended due to insufficient funding, we would de facto see the prices of certain very popular models rise by several thousand euros. We are thinking, for example, of the Citroën ë-C3, which would therefore increase to €22,947 instead of €18,947 without the €4,000 bonus. The same goes for the R5 e-Tech, which would therefore be sold at €24,990 instead of €20,990 without the maximum bonus of €4,000. It now remains to be seen what the government intends to do: suspension or total cancellation? It's a mystery.
