Good news for all iPhone owners with Free subscriptions. The operator has just added a new option that will allow you to surf at lightning speed on your device. We'll explain everything to you.
While Free has been in the spotlight today for the wrong reasons, namely the impact of Netflix's latest price increases on certain Freebox offers, we can console ourselves with some good news. Indeed, the operator has just announced via a press release the activation of a new feature for iPhone owners. Thanks to it, those who own one of the latest models from the Apple brand will be able to surf at lightning speed on their device. Free is finally activating this highly anticipated option on iPhones As you may have guessed, the web troublemaker has finally decided to launch 5G+ on the Cupertino company's phones. It was about time, some would say, as Android smartphones have already been able to benefit from “real” 5G with Free since September 2024. In just a few months, the number of eligible devices has skyrocketed, and today, the operator already has more than a hundred 5G+ compatible models, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy S25, Xiaomi 15, Honor Magic 7 Pro, and Google Pixel 9. For the uninitiated, 5G+, also known as 5G SA (Standalone), does not rely on an operator's existing 4G network. No, it actually relies on a 100% 5G infrastructure. Its main advantage is that it allows operators to offer customers a true 5G experience, without any limitations or compromises. 5G SA can support the full range of 5G use cases, including eMBB, and even ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and massive machine-type communication (mMTC). And for users, this mainly translates into higher speeds, reduced latency, better network security and advanced services like VoNR (Voice over New Radio).
How to take advantage of Free 5G+ on your iPhone?
In concrete terms, how can you take advantage of Free 5G+ on your iPhone? First of all, and this goes without saying, you must have subscribed to a Free 5G plan. Unfortunately, this is not the only condition. Due to hardware limitations, only the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 (including their Pro and Max variants) are compatible with 5G SA. If you check these two boxes, you will be able to enjoy 5G SA on your device after having:
- installed the latest software version available (in this case, iOS 18.5)
- activated the 5G+ option in your Free Subscriber Area, in the My options section
- restarted the phone or activated/deactivated Airplane mode to apply the new settings
Note that you will also have to take a quick look at your iPhone's settings to activate 5G SA:
- Go to Settings > Cellular Data > Options > Voice & Data
- Now select 5G Auto and enable the 5G SA and Voice options on 5G Standalone
And there you have it, you can now enjoy “real” 5G on your iPhone.
