It's a hotly debated topic in all multiplayer FPS games. And Battlefield 6 is no exception. In recent days, the community has been in a frenzy over a detail spotted in the game's test files: the presence of a matchmaking system based on player skill, the famous SBMM (Skill-Based Matchmaking). A divisive mechanic. Some find it useful for balancing teams. Others hate it, fearing games that are too serious or less fun. Faced with player concerns, the developers have decided to to speak out. And their response is rather reassuring.
Yes, there will be SBMM... but no panic for Battlefield 6
It was David Sirland, producer on Battlefield 6, who took the time to explain things. According to him, yes, a skill-based matchmaking system will be present in the game. But be careful: it will be used very lightly. The main objective will remain to find matches quickly, with players who have a good connection. Player skill will only be a secondary factor.
In short, there's no risk of only being matched against opponents of your skill level in every game in BF6. This isn't the spirit of Battlefield. In reality, this matchmaking system is nothing new. It already exists in Battlefield 2042. And it works on exactly the same principle:
- Find a match quickly.
- Promote a good connection.
- Balance the teams once the players are assembled.
David Sirland also points out that without a minimum consideration of skills, the best teams would be systematically unbalanced. Which wouldn't be fun either. In short, Battlefield 6 seems to understand players.
The saga remains faithful to its DNA
There is no question of transforming Battlefield 6 into an ultra-competitive FPS where each game resembles an e-sport tournament. The heart of the game remains the same: spectacular battles, huge maps, and players of all levels who cross paths in explosive clashes. The matchmaking system is there to ensure a minimum of balance, not to restrict the fun of the game.
