After many months of waiting, Recall, or rather, "Retrouver" (its French name), will officially be deployed to all Insiders' machines. Microsoft's controversial feature should arrive within a few weeks on Copilot+ PCs around the world.
The Recall saga is (almost) coming to an end. Nearly a year after presenting it, Recall, the backup feature that Microsoft wants to integrate into Windows 11 on Copilot+ PCs, should be arriving very soon for all users.
A feature delayed several times due to privacy concerns
One thing is certain, the development of Recall has not been easy for Microsoft's teams. Because shortly after its unveiling, this feature, which records all of your PC's activities to help you more easily find what you're looking for, began to cause concern among some. The very operation of Recall, which relies on artificial intelligence, has indeed intrigued many security specialists, who saw this new tool as a real nightmare for privacy.
Faced with concerns raised from all sides, Microsoft wanted to calm things down and ultimately postponed the launch of its controversial feature for the first time. And, even though Microsoft indicated that it was doing everything possible to strengthen its new tool in terms of security, the company has once again had to postpone the launch of Recall. To justify this new delay, Microsoft has this time indicated that it wants a little more time to improve the security of its feature.
It was only at the end of November that the Redmond company began to gradually roll out a first version of Recall to certain Insider members.
Recall is available on Copilot+ PCs for Insiders
Five months later, the problems encountered by Microsoft with Recall seem to be, at least in part, resolved. At least, that's what the Redmond company's latest blog post suggests. It has just officially announced a gradual rollout of the feature to all Insider members. If you are one of them, and you have a Copilot+ PC, a quick visit to Windows Update should allow you to obtain the relevant update. This is, a priori, update KB5055627.
After installing this update, and a proper restart of your machine, Windows 11 should display, in full screen, a page asking you whether or not you want to enable "Recall" on your PC. Please note, however, that for the feature to be active, you must have previously configured Windows Hello authentication.
Once all these formalities are completed, everything you do on your PC will be recorded in the form of a screenshot that you can then explore chronologically. You can then search for what you want by entering keywords, and Microsoft's AI will analyze the content of these screenshots to show you the desired results.
The "Recall" feature, currently in Preview, will still need to be tested for several weeks before being rolled out for good (hopefully in a stable version) on all Copilot+ machines.
