According to attendees of the Comicon Naples 2025 event, the creator of Dragon Quest, Yuji Horii, and the cult classic Chrono Trigger, made a huge blunder by confirming a remake of the latter. Will one of the most legendary RPGs really be returning in the coming months? There's some very bad news for die-hard fans of the franchise.
A remake of Chrono Trigger for 2026?
Yuji Horii is still working on Dragon Quest 12 and Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake. While we have no idea when DQXII will be released, the next compilation of remakes on all current platforms, namely PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, will be released this year. Suffice to say, the creator has been quite busy lately. But that didn't stop him from attending Comicon Naples 2025 to share a moment with the visitors who came to see him.
During this first-rate panel, it was reported that Yuji Horii admitted that a Chrono Trigger remake was currently in development. This news quickly set the internet ablaze, but a few hours later, all fans' hopes were dashed. It turns out that this was ultimately just a mistake by the interpreter, or even a joke, but by no means an early announcement of a Chrono Trigger remake by its creator. Nevertheless, all may not be lost.
While Yuji Horii hasn't leaked a remake, we officially know that Chrono Trigger surprises are coming as the game celebrated its 30th anniversary on March 11, 2025. "On the occasion of the 30th anniversary, we will be launching various projects over the next year that go beyond the gaming world to express our gratitude to everyone who has played Chrono Trigger so far!" stated Square Enix. Despite the two Dragon Quest projects, Yuji Horii is also working on a new game in collaboration with Muneyuki Kaneshiro (Blue Lock). It's a dark fantasy multiplayer title inspired by the board game Sugoroku.
