While immersive video enthusiasts have been turning to GoPro or Insta360 for years, DJI is reportedly preparing to enter the arena with a 360-degree camera. Images of a prototype have leaked, revealing a compact Osmo 360 in detail. Here's what we know so far about the device.
DJI Osmo 360: a square design and promising features
Unlike its elongated competitors, the DJI Osmo 360 is said to have a compact, almost cubic shape. The images show a device that's about 6.5 cm wide and about 9 cm high. Three physical buttons (power, record, and menu) accompany a touchscreen that allows for tapping and swiping. The device would operate with interchangeable 7.55 Wh batteries, similar to those in the Osmo Action range.

Other features noted in the quick start guide include microSD storage, USB-C connectivity, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and a tripod mount with copper contacts. These could power accessories or transfer data.
Inside, DJI has reportedly adopted an optical architecture using 45-degree tilted mirrors to redirect light toward the sensors, a technique already seen on Insta360. A technical choice that would optimize the footprint while maintaining good image quality.
Should we really wait for DJI's 360 camera?
Despite these numerous indiscretions, doubts persist about the actual commercialization of this Osmo 360. DJI leak specialist Jasper Ellens remains skeptical. He claims that the lack of leaks in the usual channels (online stores, distribution partners) suggests that the product may never see the light of day, at least in the American market.
DJI's caution could be explained by the current geopolitical context or internal diversification strategies. However, the level of development of the prototype and the wealth of leaked documents suggest that the Chinese brand is seriously considering competing with Insta360 and the upcoming GoPro Max 2. Time will tell whether the Osmo 360 will ever come out of the box or not.
