Holy George R.R. Martin! The author of A Song of Ice and Fire is piling up projects, much to the chagrin of Game of Thrones fans, who are convinced that the novelist will never finish The Winds of Winter, the penultimate volume of his titanic medieval fantasy work. On his blog, the writer responded to the numerous criticisms he receives from disgruntled readers with a blunt post - one detail of which intrigues us.
George R.R. Martin addresses his detractors
This Tuesday, the father of Game of Thrones published a post on his blog aimed at his detractors. Indeed, the writer has just announced the film adaptation of a work by his late friend, novelist Howard Waldrop. In addition to this announcement, George R.R. Martin "had fun" predicting the negative reactions of Game of Thrones fans, who have been wanting only one thing for years: the announcement of the imminent publication of his next novel, The Winds of Winter.
I know, I know. Some of you will be furious, as you are every time I announce something here that doesn't concern Westeros or The Winds of Winter. You've lost hope in me, or in my book. I'll never finish The Winds of Winter. If I do, I'll never finish A Dream of Spring [the final book in the series]. If I do, it won't be good. I should find another writer to replace me... I'm going to die soon anyway, because I'm too old.
Is Game of Thrones still a priority for George R.R. Martin?
George R.R. Martin then listed the main criticisms leveled at him by fans, before assuring them that he still cared about his work and his characters... Without, however, addressing the problem of his monstrous delay in publication.
I lost all interest in Game of Thrones decades ago. I don't care about writing anymore; I spend my time doing nothing and spending my money. I'm also the editor of the Wild Cards books, but you hate Wild Cards. You may hate everything I've written, the books that won the Hugo Award and the ones that didn't... You only care about The Winds of Winter. You've told me that often enough. [...] The fact is, I care about them. And I care about Westeros and the Winds of Winter, too. The Starks, the Lannisters, and the Targaryens, Tyrion and Asha, Dany and Daenerys, the dragons and the direwolves—I care about them all. More than you can imagine.
Game of Thrones fans will notice that George R.R. Martin mentions Daenerys Targaryen twice, who this theory suggests will marry this Greyjoy in the sequel: once as Daenerys, and once as Dany. Could this mean that the Mad Daenerys of the HBO series will also be part of the Winds of Winter? We can also note the presence of Asha, Theon's sister, in the list of characters listed by the author... Will she have even greater importance in the rest of the novels? That piques our curiosity!
