Naughty Dog has been in a state of total excitement these past few months. The Santa Monica-based studio has followed the announcement of its new franchise with numerous releases surrounding The Last of Us (the PC port of the second installment, the compilation of both games, and the broadcast of season 2 of the HBO series). However, not all of its projects seem to be coming to fruition. While rumors surrounding a certain "Uncharted 5" were beginning to pick up again, reports are reporting that a new game has been canceled internally.
Good or bad news for Uncharted 5?
Not everything has been rosy for Naughty Dog since the release of the sequel to the adventures of Joel and Ellie. Driven by the richness of the post-apocalyptic universe and the enthusiasm surrounding it, the studio launched into the development of a separate, fully multiplayer opus. Ultimately, the project was canceled in 2023. The teams then embarked on other adventures. However, one of them also died. Fans are keeping their fingers crossed that it won't be Uncharted 5.
Although Naughty Dog announced several years ago that it had turned the page on the Uncharted chapter, the franchise is not dead. In fact, several rumors were still reporting last year that a remake of the first opus was in the works. Moreover, a recent leak concerning a project led by Shaun Escayg, the director who signed the spin-off The Lost Legacy, has revived hopes that Uncharted 5 would see the light of day within the Californian studio.
But new turmoil has recently been hitting the Naughty Dog teams. According to Daniel Ritchman, an insider who had previously accustomed us to news coming from Hollywood, the studio has just cancelled a new game. According to his sources, the title would have been abandoned a little earlier in 2025 after a year of development. The launch of the internal project would have followed the discontinuation of The Last of Us Online. Concern is already rising among fans who are hoping for an Uncharted 5.
However, at the same time, there may still be hope. Rumors suggest that another unannounced project is still in the works alongside Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. It would be Escayg's infamous game. If that were the case, there would likely still be a chance for "Uncharted 5."
