Google Messages is currently rolling out a new RCS feature: recalling messages already sent – which will then disappear from everyone's inbox if necessary. A new feature that also comes with the muting of conversations that generate too many notifications.
Google Messages is rolling out a handful of RCS new features that we already told you about last week. The most interesting is undoubtedly the recall of messages already sent – which allows you to delete any message you regret sending from all recipients. A feature that relies on how the RCS system works, which succeeds traditional SMS – with a slew of new features that go far beyond the simple exchange of messages.
These include emoji reactions, previews enriched with links such as videos, songs on Spotify, or links to press articles… So many things that were previously reserved for third-party messaging applications like WhatsApp, and which are therefore becoming standard on an overwhelming majority of Android smartphones. At the time of writing, nearly 40 million devices in circulation in France are compatible with these new features.
Google is rolling out very useful new features in the Messages app
Message recall is moving from beta to a general public rollout, which means that you should be able to use it directly on your smartphone within a few days to a few weeks. Another new feature also coming to the beta versions of Google Messages, more specific to the application: muting conversations that generate a little too many notifications.
This feature allows you to temporarily (or permanently) stop notifications from appearing when receiving messages from certain correspondents or certain group conversations. You can select the duration of this muting via a menu that offers you snooze options for 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours – or, permanently stop notifications if necessary.
When this feature is active, you must be careful to check these conversations regularly – to avoid missing important information. While it was thought that this new feature would arrive with a mention system, allowing you to be notified if necessary in muted conversations, it seems that this is not yet on the agenda.
Two additional small new features are also arriving in the stable version of Google Messages: it is now possible to customize the icon for group conversations. In addition, a new option allows you to choose a specific color theme in these groups – which essentially allows you to change the color of the bubbles. To take advantage of all these new features, you must update Google Messages from the Play Store.
Some new features, such as the reminder of sent messages, have a server component. This means that their arrival could materialize within a few days, depending on how quickly Google chooses to deploy them.
