For several months, many PS5 players have been reporting a persistent issue: despite VRR support, the image would stutter every eight seconds. This annoying problem affected even the smoothest games like Gran Turismo 7 or Street Fighter 6. The result was a choppy visual experience, far from what this technology promises...
One big problem less on the PS5
VRR, for Variable Refresh Rate, synchronizes the screen display frequency with the number of frames per second generated by the console. In short, this eliminates image tearing and improves fluidity. But it still has to work. And this has not been the case for several months on PS5, including the Pro. A real shame considering the console's price.
Good news, the latest system update, discreetly rolled out this week, seems to have put an end to the problem. Even though Sony didn't specify anything in the official notes, Digital Foundry confirms that the tests are conclusive. And player feedback is consistent: the famous micro-stutters have disappeared. Miracle!
And now?
It took nearly seven months for the bug to be fixed on PS5. Long, certainly. But better late than never. This improvement is all the more important as VRR becomes a key selling point for next-gen consoles. It remains to be seen whether Sony will continue its efforts to refine support, especially on the most popular TVs.
Because yes, we must hope that Sony continues to improve VRR, for example by lowering the minimum range to 40 Hz, as some competitors already offer. In the meantime, PS5 players can finally enjoy a smoother experience on their favorite games. Just in time for Summer Game Fest. Isn't life beautiful?
