The new version of watchOS is approaching, and Apple Watch owners are wondering if they'll be eligible. A leaker thinks he already knows which models are compatible. Here they are.
No, there is no typo in the title of this article. Apple is reportedly preparing to change the way it numbers the versions of its various operating systems. So don't expect iOS 19, watchOS 12, or visionOS 3, but iOS 26, watchOS 26, and visionOS 26. There's nothing complicated about choosing the number: these are the last two digits of the coming year. This is common practice for products released at the end of the calendar year and makes it easier to keep track of for everyone.
The next version of the operating system for the Apple Watch might not have the expected number, but for owners of the brand's smartwatch, it doesn't change anything. They're still asking the same question: will their model be eligible for it? Luckily, MacRumors spotted a list of compatible models that a reliable leaker posted on his private X account. Let's take a look.
Here are the Apple Watches compatible with watchOS 26 according to a leaker
The following Apple Watch models are expected to receive watchOS 26 when it rolls out. This is of course a list to be taken with a grain of salt, but the leaker who originated it has often given accurate information regarding Apple's operating systems:
- Apple Watch Series 6
- Apple Watch Series 7
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Series 10
- Apple Watch Ultra
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
If these are indeed the compatible models in the end, there's no real surprise. These are the same ones that support watchOS 11, the current version of the system. As for the changes brought by watchOS 26, they are not expected to be as dramatic as those expected in iOS 26. We expect some additions like third-party app shortcuts in the Control Center, and of course, watch faces reflecting the new interface design. We will find out more at Apple's WWDC on June 9, 2025.
