After Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and The Lord of the Rings, a new heroic fantasy franchise is about to hit the big screen. The good news is that Alex Garland, a prestigious director, will be directing this new blockbuster.
Who is Alex Garland?
Alex Garland began his career as a novelist. After several years writing novels, he decided to turn to the seventh art. He entered the screenwriting world and wrote for the talented Danny Boyle. It is to this British novelist in particular that we owe the excellent stories of The Beach (1999), 28 Days Later (2003) or even Sunshine (2007), all directed by Danny Boyle.
Subsequently, he decided to move behind the camera. Alex Garland started directing in 2014 with the excellent Ex Machina (after an unofficial experience on Dredd). Since then, the filmmaker has directed exciting films with Annihilation (2018), Men (2022) and the incredible Civil War (2024). We are expecting him soon with Warfare, his next film, but also to write the highly anticipated 28 Years Later, also directed by Danny Boyle.
Elden Ring soon in theaters
If we talk about Alex Garland, it is because the latter will be in charge of a film adaptation of Elden Ring. Bandai Namco, the company that distributes the game Elden Ring, has officially confirmed that a live-action Elden Ring movie is in development, directed by Alex Garland.
Alex Garland's presence on such a project is explained by the involvement of A24. Indeed, Bandai Namco turned to A24 for the distribution of this future project. Obviously, where there's A24, there's Alex Garland.
An announcement that isn't really surprising given the success of the game Elden Ring. Released in February 2022, Elden Ring is an action-RPG video game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco. Created by Hidetaka Miyazaki (the director of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro), in collaboration with writer George R. R. Martin (author of Game of Thrones), the game was a huge critical and commercial success.
The universe of Elden Ring is a huge open world, which allows for great freedom of exploration in a classic but attractive heroic fantasy universe. The story takes place in the Between-Earths, the equivalent of Middle-earth. To date, Elden Ring has sold 30 million copies worldwide, solidifying its place as a true phenomenon.
